How to create a new web using a FrontPage theme

Using a host site with FrontPage server extensions. ( Publishing to a host site that supports FrontPage) Our website example name for this lesson will be asthewebturns0.

Note: their are many ways to accomplish each task in FrontPage.   I will not even try to cover them all.  As you work more with Front Page you will learn your own style.

Lets get started...
Start a new web  instructions below ( using a FrontPage theme (*theme on this page*)  I highly recommend creating your web in 800 x 600 resolution, so everyone on the net can view your page with out having to scroll sideways.  The easy way to accomplish this; set your monitor to 800 x 600 before creating the new web. This will set your default at 800 x 600.

Note this is where you plan out your site…

How many pages do you want?  What are you going to do with your site? What is your goal?  Do you want to sell something, show off family pictures? Sometimes it is easier to draw an outline on paper of what you want as the main categories for your site. This one step can be long  yet will save you many headaches in the future.. Changing some items down the road can be very difficult or impossible for beginners not to mention time consuming, and frustrating.. So plan, plan and plan some more…  For now lets choose the personal website option for this lesson. How?

Open Front Page

Click on the word  "file" ( upper right corner of your screen See Graphic), click New, click page or web, Click new from web site template, See GRAPHIC ( Left side of your display) and choose personal, “when the white box  comes up in XP type the following” C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Webs\name of your web site then click ok

In ME: C:\My Documents\My Webs\name of your web site. "If message comes up create folder click yes." Click OK

See Graphic NOTE: to return to this Lesson page click either your browsers  back  or reload button.

Now to view the new site you just created, click on the navigation folder on your left in FrontPage Now look on your right. The little house graphic is your Index page you must have an index page to have a working web and to publish said web… Right click the index page " in nav view see graphic and choose rename.. name it what you want usually  “The Name of your site” Example ours is asthewebturns0

 You’ll see the following

about us,

Interests,

Favorites

Photos

Feedback

Even if you don’t want these pages don’t delete them.  just rename them…..  How? By right clicking, choosing rename and giving  the page a short name.  REMEMBER to rename your page in folder list view as well. ( NEVER rename the index.htm page NEVER, unless it's required by another server)  DON'T use CAPS or Spaces in your folders list names  See graphic

For this lesson we will leave everything as is except..

Rename your home page in nav view IE: "your web site name"... Leaving your Index.htm page in Folders view as is… Index is the only page that you never rename!!!!!! in folder view ( unless directed by another host server to rename it to default.htm... I can't say this enough NEVER CHANGE THIS unless otherwise directed…) If you do you’ll no longer have a working home page!!!!

Now that you've re-named your home page, lets publish your website…
Make sure your internet connection is live
Go up to your FP menu bar
Choose file
Publish web

The connection to FrontPage on tripod dialog box will pop up
Put in your user name (your site name) Ours for this lesson is asthewebturns0
Enter your password, click ok
check save password if you wish.
Now your publish destination box pops up
Enter your website URL given to you by Tripod via email
Example: http://frontpage.tripod.com/asthewebturns0/

See Graphic

Click ok
You will see a conflict ?  Error message.. (This is showing because your tripod site already has an index.html page.( That was created by tripod when you signed up for the space)   To publish your site, do the following. Right click the index.html on the right side of your screen, choose delete choose ok.  See graphic for conflict error.
-------

2nd Option, Click the options button
Change the top option by clicking in the white circle to Publish all pages overwriting pages already on destination
Click ok
Click publish

NOTE: remember to go back and change your options back to the default to  publish changed pages only on your next upload-publish of your website!!!!!!!  Will save you lots of time later on..

Once your page is published you’ll see a screen says click here to view your webpage.. Click it.. Your web should be active. (Note: If you see a page that says notice page is coming soon.  Scratching your head about now?  Don't worry.  Just do the following...)

 Now go to tripod www.tripod.com
You should see a page that says hello your web name
If not log in
Put your mouse on the build & Edit menu button,
A 2nd menu will appear
Click on the file manager link
find a file named index.html put a check in the white box and choose delete
You’ll get a message saying the file has been successfully deleted
Log out
------

Now type in your home page URL
You can do this several ways…

To view your page you have the following options. https://members.tripod.com/yoursitenamehere

Or the one I like shorter version http://yoursitenamehere.tripod.com

Either will bring up your newly published site.

You  can click your link and you’ll see there is now a  website on Tripod..   End of Lesson 1

I’ll make more lessons  available on this website https://members.tripod.com/asthewebturns0  as they are generated. During the course of these lessons, we will be making changes to this web site and showing the steps involved to accomplish our tasks.  Have fun!
